Starring Malcolm McDowell as the utterly unforgettable Mick Travis, If… comes to Hackney Picturehouse on 14th July for a chance to see Lindsay Anderson’s classic film on screen.

At the time, both utterly surreal and controversial, If… now read as one of the key documents of the 1960s, an insider's astute evocation of the emotional climate, repressive and tyrannical, experienced by pupils at an English public school - and a surrealist allegory and fantasy about romantic insurrection and defiance.

A film that epitomises its time, shot almost concurrently with the events of May ‘68, with a climax that mirrors the children's rebellion in Vigo’s Zéro de conduite - but escalated into an even funnier, more violent and irreconcilable dimension. The screening will be followed by an informal discussion with a resident film expert.
