It’s Tokyo via Tottenham! Hokkaido via Hackney, as Frank Chickens bring an evening of alternative Japan Matsuri to East London's BETHNAL GREEN WORKING MENS CLUB! Expect live music, joyful performance and sake sipping!

 

Frank Chickens

Frank Chickens initially found fame in the late 80’s as a kimono & cardboard clad pop performance duo scoring a hit with the classic single “We are Ninja - No Geisha!” they released 5 albums & toured the world! A Channel 4 series + Perrier nomination + Edinburgh Festival Comedy Gods Award followed! (Thanks to Stewart Lee!)

The Chickens have hatched and grown: with an average of 15 members...often more! With songs, stories, costume changes, video visuals and a cast of thousands they are as joyful & fun as ever!

 

Hibiki Ichikawa Shamisen Ensemble

Travel back to the sounds of ancient Edo with a rare performance of traditional Japanese music in the UK from a masters of the art. Hibiki plays the Tsugaru Shamisen, a traditional 3-stringed Japanese instrument rarely heard in Europe & tonight he will debut his new Ensemble group.

 

Akari Mochizuki - The Enka Angel!

Akari is an Enka & Minyo folk singer from Yamaguchi prefecture in Japan.

Enka is uniquely Japanese and became popular from the 1940's onwards.

The lyrics of the songs, like blues songs in the west, often deal with sadness, lost love, death,

Akari has sung for the Emperors birthday but now Akari singss for you! Coz you're just as important!

 

BeiBei Percussion Group

Beats from the East. Acclaimed virtuoso multi percussionist & composer; Beibei has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the classical music world, receiving international praise for her projects was listed in the top 50 Chinese musicians by the Chinese Ministry of Culture.

She gives masterclasses & workshops across Europe, US and China also leading the traditional Chinese percussion programme at SOAS.

 

DJ. Gaikokuchan-Man

Soundtracking the evening with vintage Showa period pop, random Kaiju movie soundtracks and matsuri Minyo selected from his dusty vinyl collection hunted out in the flea markets of Edo while working with Fuji Rock Festival. Perfect listening for an evenings sake sipping! Kanpai!

 

DJ. Toshi Toshi - The Edo Empress

Taking us into the Floating World of the night with a selection of East meets West vintage vinyl sounds from the Rock and the Roll to the Enka!

 

Doors open at 7.30pm with live performances starting soon after so don't dilly dally and get down early for for Sake, beers, music and good times!
