BEAUTY
Beauty by Design - the Mamasia story

Sample the natural beauty and wellbeing brand Mamasia. This talk explores beauty, cultural identity, and celebrating difference. Mamasia co-founder Maame Opoku leads the discussion joined by ‘Curious Creative’ Gideon Cudjoe.

MATERIALITY
Tile Making Workshop
Tuesday 18 September 2018, 12:00-14:00
Free, Designer in Residence Studio.
Designer in Residence, Ella Bulley, invites the audience to take part in a practical workshop of producing tiles as part of the project ‘Remnants’ in response to this years designer in residence theme: Dwelling. The participant leaves enriched with knowledge of a designer’s cross disciplinary design process, a souvenir and an opportunity to contribute to the research being gathered on expats and repats of Ghanaian heritage.

STYLE & FASHION
Style Armour: Rude-boys, Windrush to present

Led by Harris Elliott, creative director, stylist & designer, this talk explores the fashion and style of Caribbean people during their migration to UK shores and how their sense of self, exhibited through their clothing enabled them to forge their UK identities.

MUSIC
Breaks, Beats & Basslines

Free, Ulm & Bauhaus.
An interactive panel presentation and discussion that maps the music that elevated the Caribbean community spirit, promoted self-reliance and cultural unity through the eras. Led by musician, DJ and producer, Dego (2000Black / 4Hero) this event will be using the music storytelling format of playing 22 music tracks each for 22 seconds.

Speakers:

Maamè Opoku
Maame is a co-founder and beauty therapist of MamaSia - a natural beauty and wellbeing UK brand. She leads the vision by supporting social responsibility initiatives, whilst inspiring young women to authentically embrace their unique and natural beauty. She repurposes her ancestral secrets.

Gideon Cudjoe
Gideon Cudjoe (aka the Curious Creative) is a self-taught graphic designer, art-director and brand owner Nevele. Gideon tackles creative briefs using his unorthodox approach to problem solving. Music, design, engineering, fashion and advertising are all sectors where you can experience his professional body of work.

Harris Elliott
Well-respected amongst his contemporaries, Harris is a creative director, stylist and fashion polymath. Shape, form, light and texture are important to his creative process. These can be found in his signature H by Harris brand he founded in 2009.

Dego
Pioneer of multiple music forms, breakbeat, jazz fusion, jungle/drum n bass and broken beat to name a few. Dennis “Dego” McFarlane is a producer, multi-instrumentalist and DJ. Co-founder of 4hero and 2000 Black, his music catalogue and its impact is seismic.

Ella Bulley
Ella Bulley is a material designer approaching design with a combination of research and material experiments intersected with artisan techniques, which frequently crosses the realms of textiles, product and set design.
