In times of emergency, what role should an artist play, if any? How can the arts help? This vital discussion explores the relevance of culture and creativity to humanitarian crises.
In 2014, playwrights and directors Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson travelled to ‘The Jungle’, the refugee camp at Calais. There, they founded something that was very difficult to imagine: a theatre and arts space. Good Chance Theatre has flourished amid its sometimes torrid (and often misrepresented) circumstances. They have given a voice to this makeshift community; an artistic outlet that, they would argue, is a basic need and human right.
At this event, Good Chance Theatre present an exploration of how the arts can respond to humanitarian crises, as they themselves did. Chaired by John Martin of Pan Intercultural Arts, speakers include both Joes from the Good Chance Theatre, the playwright Mojisola Adebayo, and flautist Wissam Boustany. Following the discussion, members of the Palestine Youth Orchestra will perform a selection of chamber music and Middle Eastern music.
