Jude Law takes the lead role in this stage retelling of Luchino Visconti’s incisive slice of neorealism, conceived and directed by visionary Belgian director Ivo van Hove.
It tells the story of Gino, a drifter that begins an intense, sadomasochistic affair with Hanna, a waitress in a roadside restaurant. But she’s got a husband, the much older proprietor of the cafe. She dreams of getting away from him and owning the business herself, and Gino is so entranced with Hanna that he’ll do anything that they can be together – even if that means killing her husband.
Ossessione itself was based on The Postman Always Rings Twice, James M Cain’s classic crime novel. Notorious upon its release for its violent and sexual content, it served as inspiration for the hard-boiled noir films of the era. Here, Ivo van Hove captures all of the lascivious violence of the genre in his fourth Visconti adaptation.
