David Cronenberg: 'Spider' at the BFI Southbank
Based on Patrick McGrathty’s novel, Spider immerses the audience into the depths of a deeply disturbed boy who has crafted a reality all his own - a reality that takes him to the very limits of his wavering sanity.

25 & 30 April. Cronenberg's masterpiece is a full-on Freudian drama, with Ralph Fiennes superbly cast as the closed-off protagonist revisiting childhood haunts - and painfully Oedipal emotions - after spending years in a mental hospital. Miranda Richardson is likewise extraordinary as his mother, while Cronenberg's control of colour, composition, design and pace is as meticulously precise as Hitchcock's at its finest.
