Looking for your randy-nuns-going-mad-up-a-moutaintop fix? Then look no further. 'Black Narcissus' is the film for you.

Made over 50 years ago, 'Black Narcisuss' has certainly retained its power to enthrall and entertain. It's replete with stiff upper lips, but Powell and Pressburger's film is immune to the ravages of the time, and feels more like the product of another planet than a different age, with superb performances from Deborah Kerr, Kathleen Byron and Jean Simmons. The attention to detail is remarkable, and the gothic melodrama of the story is heightened by the backdrops that suggest that this was a film shot on location, rather than at Pinewood Studios.

By turns amusing and frightening, Black Narcissus wears many hats, and sports each as well as the next. This is a film that ought to feel as outdated as the British Raj, but by tackling all manner of subjects and embracing many aspects of filmmaking, Powell and Pressburger created a masterpiece that still feels light years ahead of the opposition.
