Until 26 March. ENO, Improbable and Philip Glass present this mesmerising & hauntingly beautiful meditation upon Gandhi’s early years in S. Africa & his spiritual progress towards the concept of non-violent protest. Instilled with a breathtaking theatrical flair by Improbable’s award-winning director-designer partnership of Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch, Glass’s masterpiece is a mesmerising and hauntingly beautiful ensemble piece, which is performed in Sanskrit, the melodic language of the Bhagavad-Gita (Song of the Lord), to which Gandhi referred daily. Based on his early years in South Africa, Satyagraha explores how the spiritual and political leader developed non-violent protest into a powerful force for change, as India marks her 60th year of independence.
