After taking many, many photographs of hands and putting them all together into a neat little book, tonight sees the launch of Handviews - the book where hand gestures and symbols speak louder than words. Normally, to express an opinion one is dependant on the acquisition of specific communication skills and this is perhaps the principle feature that defines us in the social hierarchy, particularly in a post-modern context.
Handviews embodies the desire to go beyond this linguistic segregation and “find a game everyone can play”, to create a conversation about our lives in which everyone can communicate on an equal footing. Inspired by the Eastern ritual 'mudras', which are bodily gestures usually formed with the hands and fingers, that underpin much of hindu and buddhist iconography, yoga, meditation and dance. Each area of the hand has a reflex reaction in a specific part of the brain. A mudra locks and guides energy flow and reflexes to the brain. So what can you do with this lovely little book? Well, Handviews is a communication tool that can be used to express essentially anything, the choice of your handview will always be determined by your cultural or social background, (the meaning of specifc hand signs may mean different things in different cultures), your personality (the use of abstract, symbolic or literal shapes) and the emotion behind the message you want to transmit. But don't panick most of the times it all comes naturally at once!
