Two of the most popular pieces in the repertoire, Brahms' Violin Concerto and Dvorak's New World Symphony, share the stage.

Bedrich Smetana: Overture, The Bartered Bride
Johannes Brahms: Violin Concerto in D
Interval
Antonin Dvorák: Symphony No.9 (From the New World)

This latest concert in the OAE's Flying the Flag series straddles the Atlantic and in doing so offers audiences the best of both worlds, old and new. There's a Slavic start with Smetana's Overture, before Brahms's lyrical Violin concerto. At its premiere the composer, who was conducting, suffered an unfortunate wardrobe malfunction - something which will hopefully be avoided this evening. The concert is rounded off with Dvorak's Symphony, written in the USA but expressing the composers longing for home. And of course made famous in the Hovis ad.5.45pm at Royal Festival Hall - OAE Extras. A talk about the origins of Dvorak's New World Symphony. Free
