Race Horses’ former frontman Meilyr Jones is back with 2013, an achingly good album that takes #tbt to the next level.

Staying in Rome to write his record, Meilyr spent his days seeing churches “like a tourist”, when he came across a nun putting a plastic plant in front of a Raphael fresco: “That lack of reverence of the past I really liked. How to Recognise a Work of Art is about the obsession in our time with authenticity and the cult of the artist.” It’s an ambitious stand to take, but when you’re dealing with a voice like Jones’, it’s also totally feasible. Combine something of the unstoppable charisma of Bryan Ferry with Fred Macpherson of Spector’s acerbic social commentary and you’ll get close to the sound The Guardian called one of 2015’s “unexpected pleasures”. Make sure you’re not left unawares for his show at Village Underground in October.
