It’s when Margaret Glaspy’s louche, swaggering, vocals-scuffed-up opening to You and I kicks in that you just know.

It’s an irresistible hook the 1990s got down pat, a sound Millennials still struggle to prise themselves away from. Reverb-heavy, bluesy guitar, a fondness for the fiddle and a disconcerting ability to be about five paces to the left of what you’d expect.

Not once does Margaret’s voice become saccharine, her guitar firmly, wonderfully in Elliott Smith territory for the entire full length.

Comparisons from Joni Mitchell to PJ Harvey come easily, but spend enough time with Emotions and Math and you get the feeling she may just actually be entirely Margaret Glaspy. Catch Glaspy at Village Underground on 9th November.
