The soulful music of Laura Mvula is given a live orchestral performance by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted and arranged by Troy Miller.

This is beautifully unpredictable pop music – the double Mercury Prize nominee vocalist and composer glimpses at R&B through the prism of Contemporary composition, like Nina Simone arranged by Messiaen. Her songs are almost episodic in structure, meandering through vivid orchestral instrumentation, bursts of Funk, and intimate balladry, all led by her powerful – and vulnerable – voice.

A Birmingham Conservatoire alumni, Mvula first gained recognition for her 2013 debut Sing to the Moon which combined her soulful vocals with richly psychedelic soundscapes. 2016’s The Dreaming Room, which the LSO played on, took this one step further with a vibrant orchestral sonic palette – the soundworld that she brings to the Barbican this evening.

For this show Laura’s music is orchestrated by producer, drummer and composer Troy Miller, who also produced The Dreaming Room. Troy has also worked with artists like Gregory Porter and Amy Winehouse, and is an alumnus of the Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
