Canadian composer and performer Kara-Lis combines her experience as a church organist with her experimental electronic tendencies to create new human-machine music.
Coverdale has spent her life immersed in music, from virtuosic piano recitals as a young child to her work as a church organist and MES mixed choir in Montreal. She’s well-versed in sacred music, and knows that the best composers were those with a desire to subvert norms and confront audiences with new sounds.
Her 2014 record Aftertouches used machinised organs and choirs to conjure a post-physical world, while last year’s Sirens, a collaboration with LXV, was full of rich, droning ambience. Like sacred music, this is music that is made to be experienced live.
