Shostakovich's outrageous re-working of Shakespeare's Hamlet was first performed against the backdrop of Stalin's cultural pogroms of the early 1930s, turning the play into a visceral and biting political satire and borrowing freely from cabaret and film music. Korngold's music for Much Ado About Nothing from 1920 reveals why he became one of the pioneers of the Hollywood film music industry later in his life. This event will also feature snippets of Shakespeare's original plays brought to life alongside the music by actors Richard Hope and Emma Pallant.
