Japan’s all-female, genre-bending, progressive and stereotype subverting band CHAI hit the stage at Village Underground. Expect some wonderfully infectious and exuberant pop.

CHAI pick off where Basement Jaxx, Tom Tom Club, and CSS left us high and dry on the dance floor. Their mission: to dismantle the notions of cuteness they find so repressive in Japan, via their Neo-Kawaii concept.

Formed in 2012, in the Nagoya region of Japan, identical twins Mana and Kana asked their fellow high school classmate, Yuna, and later Yuki, a college acquaintance, to join the group we now know as CHAI. Both independent releases, “Hottaraka Series” which translates to “irresponsible series”, was the title of CHAI’s 1st EP released in December 2016, soon followed by “Homegoro Series”, their 2nd EP, released in April of the following year.
