Tessa Hughes-Freeland has been an important part of the downtown arts community in New York having been involved in the East Village Art Scene as well The Cinema of Transgression.

Her films have been shown in diverse venues, ranging from prominent museums to seedy bars in gritty neighborhoods. She works in a variety of formats and mediums and the personality of her work makes it hard to catagorise. The subject matter of her films is confrontational, transgressive, provocative and poetic.

Her films have screened internationally in North America, Europe, Australia and Asia; in museums and galleries, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York,[ and the KW Institute of Contemporary Art in Berlin.

Hughes-Freeland has collaborated on live multi-media projects with musicians like John Zorn and J. G. Thirlwell as well as publishing articles in numerous books, including “Naked Lens: Beat Cinema” and “No Focus: Punk Film,”
