In Carol Reed’s careful hands, Graham Greene’s ‘entertainment’ (now newly restored) became one of the most highly rated and best loved British films ever made.

To damaged, divided, deeply cynical post-war Vienna comes American author Holly Martins (Cotten), promised work by his friend Harry Lime. But now they say Harry’s dead. How can that be? Robert Krasker’s crisp camerawork – all tilted angles, noir shadows and striking locations – creates a palpable air of murky unease, corruption and betrayal. But thanks to pointed dialogue and expert performances, the film is rather more than an exercise in expressionist style, with Orson Welles (the subject of a BFI centennial tribute season starting in July) effortlessly stealing the show in his brief but unforgettable scenes as the mysterious Mr Lime.
