A tribute to the sleazy lows and artistic heights of Cannon Films. A double bill featuring the brilliant action film, Runaway Train, and the haunting culture-clash drama, and Shy People.

Runaway Train, from a script by Akira Kurosawa and featuring Oscar-nominated performances by Jon Voight and Eric Roberts, is quite simply one of the best action movies ever made. From a tough-as-nails, scenery-chewing prison break to a doomed journey on a train careening to nowhere, this brutal pulp melodrama delivers adrenaline-pumping thrills while transcending into the realms of animalistic existential nightmare.

Shy People won Barbara Hershey the Best Actress award at Cannes in 1987, and co-stars Jill Clayburgh, Martha Plimpton, Mare Winningham, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Don (brother of Patrick) Swayze. A beguiling tale of values and culture clash in which a Cosmopolitan journalist from New York visits her distant cousins who live a feral, superstitious existence in a remote Louisiana bayou, this is another journey from melodrama into the primordial. With an incredibly vivid sense of place and a haunting Tangerine Dream score, Shy People is one of the most overlooked oddities of 1980s cinema – whether you’re one of its fierce defenders or you’ve never heard of it, don’t miss this rare opportunity to see it from a genuine 35mm film print.
