Oshima’s erotic masterpiece is one of the most controversial of all Japanese films. Set in mid-1930s Japan, the protagonists fall into a passionate, all-consuming world of their own.
Nagisa Ôshima’s notorious erotic milestone – based on a real-life incident – was banned as obscene in Japan (and elsewhere) when first released owing to its explicit, non-simulated sex scenes. The film portrays the torrid affair between a hotel owner (Fuji) and one of his servants (Matsuda). Retreating from the militarist realities of mid-1930s Japan, the couple fall into a passionate, all-consuming – and ultimately destructive – world of their own.
