Koyaanisqatsi (1983, PG, 86 mins) will be shown outdoors on a large screen in the grounds. Chairs provided. This event is outdoor and will go ahead rain or shine!
Koyaanisqatsi (the film's title is a Hopi word) is a remarkable film without a story, dialogue, or characters which movingly portrays the impact humans are having on the environment.
It juxtaposes nature imagery, manipulated in slow motion, double exposure or time lapse, with footage of humans' devastating environmental impact on the planet.
Starting with an ancient rock wall painting, the film moves through sequences depicting clouds, waves, and other natural features, then into man-made landscapes such as buildings, earth-altering construction machinery, and cars.
The message of director Godfrey Reggio is clear: humans are destroying the planet. Minimalist composer Philip Glass provides an atmospheric score.
Delicious free South Indian vegetarian street snacks and masala teas/juices will be provided at this event courtesy of Ganapati South Indian Kitchen - set up in their own mini-meadow to give the event a true festival feel!
Before the main film they'll also be screening animated short films made by families during their free animation workshops in August.
