From Europe to North America, Geyrhalter visits sites of underground excavation and opencast mining, spaces of development and upheaval, scenes of fundamental change and irreversible destruction.
Sunday 28 July, 16:00 & Tuesday 30 July, 18:30.
Humans are the most decisive geological factor of our time.
With stunning visuals of the landscapes that humans struggle to overpower, Nikolaus Geyrhalter’s film is a breath-taking look at the scale and force of the work involved.
Several billion tons of earth are moved annually by humans – with shovels, excavators or dynamite.
From America, to Italy to Hungary, workers share their experiences and ideas around their battle to overcome the earth – the risks and the labour involved.
One worker is proud that he can say he moves mountains for a living, another worker isn’t quite sure why they’re doing it – yet there are no limits in the pursuit for domination.
