This bone-dry satire stars Jason Schwartzman as an ambitious and cynical novelist in New York.
Unashamedly and gloriously literary in tone, this spiky blend of incisive character study and bone-dry satire centres on Philip (Schwartzman), a promising, nakedly ambitious, cynical and self-regarding New York novelist. Philip’s shaky relationship with his girlfriend (Moss) deteriorates still further when he’s befriended by an egocentric grand old man of American letters (Pryce). The director’s own razor-sharp script is beautifully served by the uniformly excellent performances; also cherishable is the admirable refusal on everyone’s part to soften or sentimentalise the characters.
