Warriors from the North

Nasib Farah, Søren Steen Jesperse– 59 mins – 2014 – Denmark, Somalia

Friday 7 August 19.30 (+ Panel Discussion) / Saturday 8 August 15.00 / Monday 10 August 16.30 / Wednesday 12 August 18.30 / Thursday 13 August 20.30

Warriors from the North follows the stories of a group of disillusioned and ostracized Danish youth who leave everything behind to join the ranks of al-Shabaab, with devastating consequences. With intimate access to its highly charged subject matter, the film offers a chilling insight into what fuels the current trend of Western Muslim youth leaving Europe to join radical terrorist groups abroad.

Queens of Syria

Yasmin Fedda – 70 mins – 2014 – Jordan, UAE, UK

Saturday 8 August 17.45 / Monday 10 August 20.30 / Tuesday 11 August 20.30 / Wednesday 12 August 16.30 / Thursday 13 August 18.30

With more than 600,000 Syrian refugees living in Jordan, it is in a refugee camp in the capital Amman that theatre director Omar Abu Saada and acting coach Nanda Mohammad decide to stage Euripides’ Greek tragedy The Trojan Women. As the all-female cast of Syrian refugees are encouraged to weave their own stories of war and exile into the performance, a new layer of poignancy is added to an already deeply charged text. It quickly becomes clear that although two thousand years apart, the uprooting, enslavement and bereavement suffered by the fictional queens of Ancient Greece gives voice to the modern suffering of Syria’s displaced women.

Those Who Feel the Fire Burning

Morgan Knibbe – 74 mins – 2014 – Netherlands

Saturday 8 August 20.30 / Monday 10 August 18.30 / Tuesday 11 August 16.30 / Wednesday 12 August 20.30 / Thursday 13 August 16.30

Conflict and the economic crisis are driving increasing numbers of people to attempt the treacherous journey across the Mediterranean to Europe. At least 1,500 migrants have died on route in 2015Morgan Knibbe‘s innovative and genre-blurring film, offers a different perspective on the migrant crisis from the perspective of the few who finally make it to European shores. This up close, chaotic, overwhelming portrait presents the grim reality of a life lived constantly in limbo. Those Who Feel the Fire Burning is just as boundless in time as it is immediate, an all too desperate cry for action by the fortress that is Europe.
