Conceived by David Byrne, Contemporary Color is a collaborative performance event with music inspired by colour guard, a flag-wielding high school tradition that too often slips under the radar.
Calling on friends to score original music for his event, Byrne ignited a year-long collaboration between the colour guard community and artists such as St. Vincent, Devonté Hynes (Blood Orange), How To Dress Well, Ad-Rock, Nelly Furtado and Ira Glass, the result of which is an electric live concert that blends music, choreography and documentary storytelling.
Directed by brothers Bill and Turner Ross, Contemporary Color is a modern pillar of the concert film canon; one that not only shines a spotlight on the much cooler answer to cheerleading, but also onto how the world is about to change for these performing high schoolers, paired with entirely new material from some of the world’s leading musicians.
Expect, in the words of Byrne himself: “Elaborate costumes, professional athleticism combined with modern dance, and rock stars in their element—all culminating in the biggest glitter cannon show of your life.”
