Running from Friday 3rd June through to Sunday 5th June, the BFI’s biennial anime weekend is back with another selection of unmissable Japanese anime.

The BFI will be celebrating Manga Entertainment’s 25th birthday by screening the legendary Ghost in the Shell alongside the franchise’s newest tale. Mamoru Oshii, director of Ghost in the Shell, also directs his first English-language feature, the live-action Garm Wars: The Last Druid.

In honour of writer Satoshi Ito, who died in 2009 aged 34 with three sci-fi novels under his belt, we’re screening Harmony and Empire of the Corpses, based on his unfinished fourth book. With the last Studio Ghibli title (at least for the time being) and the latest film from the great Mamoru Hosoda, this is a weekend full of surprises to suit all tastes.

Highlights include Ryôtarô Makihara’s Empire of the Corpses, set in a parallel 19th-century Europe for a “Sherlock Holmes meets Zombies” intriguing mix of genres, and Ghost in the Shell: The New Movie- the latest addition in the popular franchise.
