Change the way you think about addiction and recovery with this innovative piece of dance theatre, inspired by real-life stories.
Paul Bayes Kitcher founded Fallen Angels Dance Theatre in 2009 with an aim to transform the lives of people struggling with addiction. Kitcher trained at The Royal Ballet School and danced with Birmingham Royal Ballet where he faced his own challenges with addiction. After his recovery he found ways to use dance to help others, and to make people re-consider the stigma attached to addiction.
Upon Awakening was created in collaboration between professional dancers and recovering addicts on Fallen Angel’s outreach programmes. Their testimonies are integral to the work, which tells a real-life story of adversity. Kitcher explains, ‘they are like rough diamonds – they create amazing shapes from the intensity of their feelings and we take that movement and develop it into the professional performance’.
