Led By Donkeys

"Lions led by donkeys" is a phrase popularly used to describe the British infantry of the First World War and to blame the generals who led them.

Our Guest Editors this week are Led By Donkeys. View their edition, here.

In 2019, four friends, Olly Knowles, Ben Stewart, Will Rose, and James Sadri founded Led By Donkeys, an art and activism campaign to hold account the 'thermonuclear hypocrisy' of pro-Brexit politicians and their cheer-leaders.

The campaign was simple. It took statements made by individuals, which Led By Donkeys believed hadn't stood the test of time. These statements were plastered over advertising billboards across the country, photographed, and shared on social media. This resonated with the British public and went viral. No-one likes a liar, right?

By November 2019 over 300 billboards in predominantly pro-Brexit areas had carried Led By Donkeys messages, and are estimated to have reached 30 million people.

Their campaigns have won awards (Campaign magazine, The Drum), and more recently they have collaborated with Covid-19 Bereaved Families for Justice, and The Good Law Project. Their campaigns continue to hold politicians account on Brexit, immigration, and the covid pandemic. There's no shortage of hypocrisy or satire.

In their Run Riot interview with writer Eli Goldstone, Led By Donkeys unpack their current campaigns, and share their hope for our future. Remember, 'action breeds optimism and hope'.

Engage how you can, enjoy, stay safe. We'll write again soon. Bottoms up! Jamie x
