Avant-garde

Who doesn't love a bit of Avant-garde? For any culture vulture it's the ultimate trigger for FOMO (for our 'senior' readers, that's 'fear of missing out'). Problem solved. Here's your fix.

So, if you're craving some new and experimental ideas and methods in film you're going to get excited about our Guest Editor, the co-founder and Director of the Japanese Avant-garde and Experimental Film Festival (JAEFF), Joshua Smith.

In Joshua's Run-Riot Interview he talks to film writer Jordan Brooks about JAEFF ahead of the second iteration, dubbed Nation - with events at the Barbican, Close-Up Film Centre, and MetFilm School (20-22 September).

Check out the interview to find out more about the programme of classic avant-garde cinema and contemporary experimental short form film. Satisfaction guaranteed.

In our Magazine section performance artist Marv Radio zero's in on the notion you don’t need to nearly kill yourself to learn from your mistakes. This anecdotal feature is based on his own life experiences, which so happen to be the great source material for his next theatre show, Mantra, as part of the Camden Fringe (16-18 August).

We're big fans of Womxn SRSLY, the collective who champion unique and challenging performance. If you're a performer (check the criteria) you can get involved with October's live 'happening'. The deadline for applications is 19th August 2019. Get-in!

Here's to wishing you an inglorious and hyper-edgy summer dear Players! Bottoms up! RR xx
