no.w.here is delighted to present a practical, hands on workshop for those who are interested in exploring the range of image capture formats currently available in both standard and super 16mm, HD/RED, and the latest Canon 7D digital SLR camera.

The workshop takes place at no.w.here and the BFI, and is sponsored by Fuji, Deluxe Soho, ICE camera hire, and the BFI.

Taking place over two evenings and two full days, the workshop will investigate the role of the cinematographer within an artist film production, and how the choice of acquisition format affects the shooting process, as well as the post-production workflow and the aesthetic quality of the work.

The workshop will: Explore theoretical, contextual, practical, and technical elements of cinematography. Address the challenges facing artists and filmmakers facing an ever changing variety of formats to work with. Focus on the strengths and weaknesses of each format, helping artists and film makers decide which format to shoot on. The process of collaboration between artist and cinematographer will be covered through case studies and informal discussion, following a screening of examples. There will also be an exploration of the various shooting formats and workflows that would likely be within reach of an artist’s production.

Through screening, discussion and workshop sessions practical, technical and financial considerations will be assessed, alongside the aesthetic characteristics of each format.
