Portfolio Preview #4 / We Three Club

Who are you and what do you do?

We are WeThreeClub, also known as husband/wife duo Chris and Alex White. We mainly illustrate and design bits and bobs - posters/apparel/print.

Why do you do what you do?

We have both always had a huge passion for art, but it was being involved in the uk DIY music scene that helped us catapult our work into the eyes of more people, by designing posters and t-shirts for various bands/promoting gigs etc..we then actually met through both being massive poster geeks and designing posters for the same festival.

We do what we do because we really couldnt imagine not creating everyday! We have grown up around art/music/culture, and it was just a natural progression into what we both do as a career today..we are definitely very lucky to of had that.

How do you work?

We work at home in our little studio in cambridge. Chris uses sharpies, tipex, tracing paper, scanners, and his mac. I use fine pens, ink, scanners and illustrator on my mac.

What’s your background?

Chris studied fine art at kingston university and became obsessively interested in psychedelic posters, whilst I studied at london college of fashion doing makeup for tv and film...but both of us always continued to draw, and through being involved in the music scene and surrounded by various bands we managed to do more and more design and illustration.

What’s integral to the work of an artist?

to be extremely passionate as you have to keep on going and fight for it...it wont just happen over night!

What role does the artist have in society?

to create an emotion through sights and sounds.

What has been a seminal experience?

One thing that was really amazing recently was when Chris did a poster campaign with Music, for Manchester City football club, to promote the match vs chelsea at home...chris' work was pasted up around manchester on massive buildings!! it was pretty incredible to see!

How has your practice change over time

We have both learnt so much through freelancing over the last 5/6 years..the way we approach things is most likely a hell of a lot more professional! And you get to understand and read jobs that you are offered a lot easier..making better choices on the direction you want to take. Being organised also helps!

What art do you most identify with?

art that has been created, originally, using pens/paint etc..we find it hard to feel emotion just through digital images...i suppose we both like a bit of mess really! and find things with imperfections a lot more beautiful than perfection.

What’s your strongest memory of your childhood?

christmas, every christmas was made so magical! and i still love it now. (alex)

What jobs have you done other than being an artist?

alex: local village shop, petrol station, shoe shop, telesales (selling windows), cinema, receptionist at a hairdressers!

chris: hmv, bartender, waiter, sandwich maker, cinema, data entry, cleaner

(i thought i would list all the comedy rubbish jobs we have had in our past!)

Why art?

Because people seemed to like what we do..

Is the artistic life lonely? What do you do to counteract it?

I do find it pretty lonely, especially working from home! Unfortunately to counteract this I frequently check facebook..as annoying as it is to procrastinate on there, it does make me feel I am not as alone...(wow that sounds really sad)

What do you dislike about the art world?

People taking your work for granted..wanting things for free..thinking it is easy to do what you do everyday!

What is your dream project?

I would love to do a record cover for the band Les Savy Fav...mainly to draw a large bearded man..

Favourite or most inspirational place?

I think our home inspires us, it makes us realise why everything is so worth it!

Professionally, what’s your goal?

We want to just keep making artwork we enjoy, for that to tie in with making some form of money, and to just be happy and realise we are lucky to be able to work doing something we love so much!

What wouldn’t you do without?

each other! (ha!)
