Interview: Edinburgh Festival star, Dr Brown returns to Soho Theatre

Can you believe it? The wild people at the Soho Theatre asked Dr Brown back, fresh from his hugely successful Soho Theatre presented Edinburgh run, where he was nominated for a Total Theatre award! Doctor Brown brings his hour of clowning, mime and naughtiness to London one more time.
Steadily becoming an international comedy sensation, Becaves is a sublimely surreal and hilarious hour from a master clown and performer. Run Riot caught up with the man himself to chat London, baby oil, sex, bikes, home and innuendo!

RR: London can't get enough of you! What do you think of Londoners?
Dr. Brown:
They don't take themselves too seriously for the most part - cause the weather's so shit and there's nothing to do really (except for hanging out in pubs) - so they have to have a good sense of humor about their shit conditions. That's one big thing I like about them. There's also a deep awkwardness that runs in the social veins of London and English life in general. I like to play with this awkwardness and Londoners seem to like it.

RR: Baby oil, cornflakes, and olives - just a few props for the punters. Who's your ideal audience?
Dr. Brown:
People who have at least a seed of an ability to laugh at themselves and to see the stupidity and absurdity of the world around us.

RR: What New Years Resolutions have you made? If not, why not?
Dr. Brown:
To make performing less about me and more about the WORD. Spreading the word of 'silliness', 'stupidity', and 'play' wherever I perform, and not worrying about if I was a great performer or not.

RR: Bike or car?
Dr. Brown:
BIKE!!!!!!!!!!!

RR: What's your relationship with sexy innuendo?
Dr. Brown:
I have no idea? I like sex?

RR: Did Philippe Gaulier teach you anything?
Dr. Brown:
Yes. Most definitely. Absolutely. He has given me the tools to go my own way (to find and develop my own world of stupidity and fantasy), but to be sensitive and open to the public so as to bring them along with me - at least those who don't take their shit too seriously!

RR: If you were to Protest, what cause would you chose?
Dr. Brown:
More nature, less concrete. More bikes, less cars. And more self-sustainability, less dependability on the powers that may be - especially when it comes to food. But I have yet to practice this as well!!!

RR: When performing in London, where's your favorite after-show place to hang out?
Dr. Brown:
Some dirty chinese restaurant in china-town!

RR: Where's 'home'?
Dr. Brown:
Los Angeles, but I am never there for more than a month a year. That's where my family, my friends, and my earth are.

RR: How do you spend your time when you're not performing?
Dr. Brown:
In London, playing chess with my buddies. At home, playing outside with my nephews and friends. Elsewhere - camping and surfing whenever I can!

RR: What would you like your audience to walk away with after your show?
Dr. Brown:
A really bad joke in their head that makes them smile. And maybe that smile will spread to someone who didn't see the show.
