James' works are immediately identifiable through their unique appearance and subtle suggestion of the presence of water.

Each image has been shot with the subject submerged in giant water tanks that are created specifically for his works.

Recent subjects have included live tropical butterflies which he breeds himself and live and fly around his studio.

Through perfecting the process of natural anesthetisation (mimicking what occurs in the wild) he is able to suspend them in the water and capture them as if they were in flight. For his series Glass, James experiments with cut flowers submerged in liquid without decay for almost a week. By obtaining the correct density, temperature and pressure the artist induces the pigment to bleed out of the petals leaving behind a skeletal 'ghost-like' structure of veins.
